Hold on to your socks, I’m going to share a recipe with you! Those of you who know me well can relax, it’s not a real one. But if you’re interested in making Chinese New Year Cake (Nian Gao or Fa Gao) then this is the post for you.
Jayden made some at school the other day and as they’re quite easy to make, we made more at home. All you need to do is find a package of the steamed bun flour, it looks like this:
Then stir in water (this particular package uses 370ml). Fill up your cake pans about 3/4 of the way and pop them into the rice cooker.
Mmmmm, yummy and fast and easy. If you’re more adventurous you might be interested in following a true recipe found here. The steamed cake is one of Jaylene and Jayden’s favorite New Year treats. What’s your favorite kind of holiday food?

I know of several Chinese stores around here that probably carry this. If the ice melts on the north Texas roads, maybe I can get out and get some. Happy Chinese New Year!

That’s probably too sugary for me, although it looks fun!

Looks mighty tasty to me. I checked the recipe link and it calls for sweet rice flour which I can eat in lieu of wheat. A trip to the Asian market is a must.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, bunnies and all.

Huh! I haven’t really done anything with our rice cooker except cook rice. I wonder what it would do with something like that.
Happy New Year!

I didn’t even know you could make those yourself. Duh! There’s a place near me that sells a giant pork and hard boiled egg steamed bun for $1.50. That’s pretty good, I think. I am so glad you are blogging again, Julie!! I am going to try a comeback as well. It is nice to see Jayden stirring away at the cakes. They came out looking very professional!!
