Advertising is everywhere and we’ve just started to touch on the subject with Jaylene. by pointing out the obvious “lies” and explaining that comercials are all about helping the company make money. Here’s a great article about this topic, which I found through the parenthacks blog:
How To inoculate your children against advertising
They’re teaching their kids about basic economics and simple marketing techniques used by advertising companies. Their plan is to help the kids recognize the tactics used and as a result question the validity of claims presented. Every time one of their kids is interested in an ad, they chat about it. First they asked if the kids thought the product did what it claimed, which introduced the idea that sometimes people say things that aren’t true and that it was okay for them to question what they saw and heard. It also taught the kids that their opinions are important. They also learned to question if the price was a good value, if the product was of good quality and to ask for more information before making purchases.

How do you deal with the media’s barrage of advertising with your children?

Madeline and I just had a discussion about this the other day. Because of truth in advertising laws here, an ad must be at least true-ish, but she was thinking gospel-true. I told her that yes, advertising to be legal (and just because it’s on TV doesn’t mean it’s legal, but just that they haven’t been caught) should be true, but that doesn’t mean that she would necessarily agree with their assessment, should she purchase the product. So you have years of revisiting this discussion to look forward to, lol!
I’ve tried to point out to my children how much time it would take them to earn the money for whatever it is that they are wanting. Is this purchase really worth that amount of time? I try to think that way about my personal and household purchases too. A dishwasher is definitely worth it, though. Okay, perhaps not the high-end models, but a basic one–for sure!

I totally agree, sbascom! I’d even go so far as to say that the high end dishwasher would be worth it!
Thanks, Julie, for this post. Alex is a little young for a conversation about advertising tactics right now, but I want to remember this a few years down the road!

We’ve been having this conversation for at least a year, but more in recent months. I remember being so shocked when at his 1 year check-up, the pediatrician asked me whether he displayed any brand recognition!!! I was horrified. =)
He never sees any commercial TV, so that part hasn’t been an issue till now. But I think savvy consumers are a must!
